Restless Leg Syndrome
Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS) is a condition that causes an uncontrollable urge to move your legs. It typically happens in the evening or nighttime hours when you're sitting or lying down. Moving eases the unpleasant feeling temporarily. RLS can begin at any age and generally worsens as you age. It can disrupt sleep - leading to daytime drowsiness.
The exact cause of RLS is often unknown, but it's believed to be related to an imbalance of the brain chemical dopamine, which sends messages to control muscle movement. Heredity plays a role too, as RLS is often seen in families where the onset of symptoms is before age 40. Sometimes, RLS can be associated with other conditions, like pregnancy, renal disease or iron deficiency. While there's no cure for RLS, treatments can help control the condition, relieve symptoms, and increase periods of restful sleep. These treatments might include treatment of iron deficiency or medications to calm down leg symptoms.
